20. Aquaculture center of Guinea (African catfish 200 000 fingerlings per year; tilapia 300 000 fingerlings per year)

Client: UNDP. Location: Dalaba, Guinea. Year: 2021.

Task

Design a hatchery to supply local fish farmers with 200,000 African catfish and 300,000 tilapia fingerlings per year (5 g).

Solution

Separate recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) for catfish, tilapia and broodstock replacement, each with: cyclone pre-filter → drum filter → moving-bed biofilter → UV disinfection → sump. Bio-blocks above the tanks strip CO₂ and add oxygen.

Water is heated by solar heaters made of black HDPE pipe on the roof, with no fuel costs. Catfish eggs are incubated in Weiss jars. A flow-through quarantine tank and a settling pond treat the discharge before it reaches the river.

Scope of work

  • Detailed (working) design of the process section
  • Equipment specification

Key features

  • Two species: African catfish and tilapia
  • Solar water heating
  • Weiss jar incubation
  • Settling pond for discharge water
